grass fed beef
What is gdb?
The narrative goes like this: cows that feed strictly on grass are “happier,” which, for you, makes it a win-win. They will reward you with many health benefits, including omega-3 fatty acids, which are full of triglycerides and, according to the experts, will lower your blood pressure and inflammation.
Bullshit?
As you know, I have difficulty with “trends that influencers push. With that said, I have been eating GFB for several years; I once belonged to a CoOp, and I shared a cow with a buddy. This means I hired a local cattle rancher for a cow, I picked out of a crowd of cattle when it was young, and watched it grow to maturity, at which time I had the option to watch its murder and cut up into manageable pieces, thus cooking and eating the said, cow. (no, I didn’t name it)
now
One thing I learned about the process is the cow ate grass among its fellow cow friends, and every so often, the cow was moved into a pseudo pin where it munched on corn, thus creating fat, hence, the beautiful marbling effect in your ribeye. The cow was then moved back to grass with its friends; this process continued until its death.
so
In my experience, a grass-fed cow doesn’t eat on grass alone, but corn as well; otherwise, the marbling effect would be non-existent. I stopped doing this because the cow had a “game taste,” This meant it wasn’t bleeding out properly, thus making it taste like Bambi meat instead of yummy cow flavor.
Store-bought GFB
So, with my personal experience aside, what are my thoughts on the store-bought GFB? Great question! Like my personal experience, the store-bought stuff has a funky flavor and smell, which makes me wonder if the cow is fed in a field; for me, it smells like hay, not grass, which might explain why I get a runny nose when I consume it. Plus, the marbling isn’t that great, either. Finally, the fat tastes funky as well, like wild game.
So, with that said, yes, in my experience, GFB is bullshit. However, I still purchase the store-bought GFB.
