underrated drummers

This is my list of some of the most underrated drummers in rock, as they somehow flew off the radar of critics and listeners alike.  Some of these drummers have had massive albums and singles, but for some reason, they could never make it over the hump of pure greatness by their peers.

*Please note, these are in no particular order because amazing can’t have a numerical sequence.

Phil collins

Phil Collins was a household name during the late 70s, 80s, and 90s as he replaced Peter Gabrial as lead throat and one-upped him by remaining the drummer. Phil also made it huge as a solo artist, as well as writing, producing, and drumming for Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, (But Seriously), ABBA’s Frida, and various movie soundtracks, to name a few. However, his drumming seemed to be overlooked by his peers, as he had a unique fill style, Hence his namesake, Phil. Nevertheless, Phil fell out of the limelight as he struggled with health issues. Then in 2015, Phil reunited with Genesis for the “Not Dead Yet” tour; although he wasn’t behind the kit, he fooled the fans into thinking he couldn’t stand and sing but instead sat in front of the drum kit while his kid took over for him on the skins. Have to love the guy’s sense of humor.

Carter Beauford

There aren’t many drummers who smile, laugh, blow bubbles, and toss in an occasional vocal while drumming, which makes Carter Beauford one of my favorite skin bangers.  Carter is the drummer and founding member of The Dave Matthews Band. In my opinion, what sets Carter ahead of his peers is he drums with a left-handed lead on a right-handed kit; as a kid, he emulated Buddy Rich while looking at his reflection in a mirror, not to mention he’s pretty fucking fast as well.

danny carey

I could go on and on about Danny’s skills behind the kit, not to mention the band he sits behind TOOL. Danny’s ability to play off-beat by implementing the Fibonacci sequence is a skill set that blows him out of the water compared to his peers, yet, the dude gets zero love for it, perhaps it’s because he remebles Jeff Daniels?
