why do we say yes, when we mean no?

Do you ever say yes to someone when you mean no? Why do we do this? What does it stem from? Is it fear of rejection?  Is it fear that the other person might get angry? Does it derive from our childhood?  I’m certain that all of these questions are part of the reason for this.
